Your VA check already reflects this year's cost-of-living bump. The 2.8% increase took effect back in January, and if you want a refresher on what that meant for your check, we covered it at the time.
Now attention is turning to next year. Early estimates for the 2027 VA COLA are already circulating, and depending on how the rest of the year's inflation data comes in, the number could be noticeably bigger than this year's.
Right now, projections for the 2027 COLA range between about 3.2% and 4.7%, depending on the source. The Senior Citizens League, a group that tracks this closely, currently projects somewhere around 3.8%.
None of these numbers are official yet. They're built on partial inflation data, and the real figure won't be locked in until the government has a full quarter of numbers to work with.
VA COLA isn't set by the VA on its own. It's tied directly to Social Security's COLA, which is calculated from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) collected in July, August, and September. Once that third-quarter data is final, the Social Security Administration compares it to the year before and calculates the percentage increase. The VA then applies that same percentage to disability compensation.
That's why the estimates keep shifting over the summer. Only part of the data exists yet.
The official 2027 COLA is expected to be announced in mid-October, likely around October 14, 2026, once the Social Security Administration finalizes the numbers. From there, the increase takes effect December 1, 2026, with the first adjusted payments going out December 31, 2026.
Nothing, really. The COLA applies automatically. But it's a good moment to make sure the rest of your file is accurate before a new number lands on top of it: correct dependents, current rating, current direct deposit info. If your rating hasn't been looked at in a while, this is also a natural point to ask whether it still reflects where you're at. We wrote about when it makes sense to pursue a higher rating if that's a question on your mind.
We don't set the COLA and we can't speed it up. What we can do is help make sure the rest of your claim is in good shape, so whatever the final number turns out to be, it's landing on an accurate picture.
We're not VA accredited, and we don't file or represent claims before the VA. What we do is walk Veterans through exactly what changes like this mean for their situation, and help make sense of a system that isn't always easy to follow on your own. We don't charge anything unless your monthly compensation goes up.
Every claim is different, and this isn't a promise of what your number will look like. But you don't have to track CPI data or guess at percentages on your own to stay ahead of it.
